So You Want to Own an Auto Manufacturer

by @ 4:44 pm. Filed under energy&environment

This is a decent article on myths of the Big 3 and the bailout: (US News and World Report)

Their small crossovers and SUVs haven’t kept pace with the best offerings from Honda and Toyota. And a puny “B car” that’s actually fun, like the Mini Cooper or Honda Fit? Does not compute. And it’s pretty hard to survive as a global car company when you simply write off a big chunk of the market.

This is something I recall from conversations in the 1980’s. I think the significance of that time is that many of us were just out of college, had seen the kind of cars they had in Europe, and didn’t understand why the US makers focused on land yachts. Even the European GM affiliates, like Vauxhall, made way cooler cars than what was available domestically. It really made no sense.

I also liked the comments to the article, particularly the one who pointed out that it’s odd that a $30K car is common place. Indeed, that might explain why the car makers were so profitable.
