Perhaps the Greatness of McCain IS His Cynicism

by @ 6:28 pm. Filed under 2008 Elections

[taken from a live mike, Chuck Todd, Peggy Noonan, and Mike Murphy]: (TPM)

(cut away)

Peggy Noonan: Yeah.

Mike Murphy: You know, because I come out of the blue swing state governor world: Engler, Whitman, Tommy Thompson, Mitt Romney, Jeb Bush. I mean, these guys — this is how you win a Texas race, just run it up. And it’s not gonna work. And –

PN: It’s over.

MM: Still McCain can give a version of the Lieberman speech to do himself some good.

CT: I also think the Palin pick is insulting to Kay Bailey Hutchinson, too.

PN: Saw Kay this morning.

CT: Yeah, she’s never looked comfortable about this –

MM: They’re all bummed out.

CT: Yeah, I mean is she really the most qualified woman they could have turned to?

PN: The most qualified? No! I think they went for this — excuse me– political bullshit about narratives –

CT: Yeah they went to a narrative.

MM: I totally agree.

PN: Every time the Republicans do that, because that’s not where they live and it’s not what they’re good at, they blow it.

MM: You know what’s really the worst thing about it? The greatness of McCain is no cynicism, and this is cynical.

CT: This is cynical, and as you called it, gimmicky.

MM: Yeah.

Of course McCain is cynical, and the Palin pick is a cynical ploy to pick up ex-HRC supporters. Which may indeed be the gist of the game plan: get enough women to vote McCain as a protest against the RBC of the DNC.

I don’t know whether Peggy Noonan is correct that the Republicans are not good narrative-crafters. I do believe they’re good at message creation. Which is why I hear the notion, repeated over and over at “progressive” blogs, that the Republican party treated HRC right, and the DNC treated her wrong. And that nothing will change until McCain gets elected.

One of the reasons I follow the Meowists as closely as I do, is that this is one place where the Republican message is being crafted, refined, and churned out en masse. There’s other sites where the same thing is occurring (sometimes where the site owner is an unwitting participant). But the Confluence is a useful resource, if for nothing more than the obviousness of the propaganda. Take this somewhat typical comment:

Often said that Obamabots wouldn’t care if they witnessed Obama perform the most heinous crime imaginable.

Well, guess what. I wouldn’t care (like milllions of others) if McCain had ten ex-wives, wasn’t a war hero - if Palin supported Ten bridges to Nowhere and had quintuplets -

After the trouncing the DNC, Big Media and the BHO camp did to Hillary AND Bill Clinton while “progressive women’s groups stood idly by”

Nothing the Republican ticket could do to make me vote for the Marxist BHO/Biden ticket.

PUMA for McCain/Palin
NOW joined by Clinton supporters WomenCountToo.

NObama NOvember

Like that bit about the “Marxist BHO/Biden ticket”? Out of curiosity, how often do you hear an actual Hillary Clinton supporter railing against the “Marxists” in the center of the Democratic party? The gist of the talking point is that Democrats are mean to women, so vote Revenge, vote McCain! It’s an illogical point, but we can all attest to those times in our lives when revenge was not a dish served cold. Logic has nothing to do with it.
