Post-Bushian Irony

by @ 2:29 pm. Filed under Bush

I’ve always wondered about people who say “Irony is Dead,” but say it in a mocking, ironic tone. Do they mean what they say literally? Or, are they really saying that the notion of irony being dead is itself dead? Or is it that irony has become so ingrained that they’re not aware of it anymore?

I wondered this as I read the following from White House counsel Fred “Funny” Fielding:

In his letter today, Fielding complained about the tone of rhetoric coming from the Democratic leaders, asking that in the future the dialogue “be distinguished by respect for the constitutional principles of both institutions and marked by a presumption of goodwill on both sides.”

I’m quite sure neither side presumes any form of will resembling the word “good.” Congress, correctly in my opinion, believes that the White House is hiding something, and that it needs to come clean. The White House insists that it has the right to hide whatever it damn well pleases. Furthermore, the core of the whole problem is the Bushian notion of an uber-branch of government located at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. A notion that is extra-constitutional to say the least. This tends to belie the use of the phrase “respect for the constitutional principles.”

Surely 3F knows this. Maybe this is what kidding around in a post-Bush v. Gore world entails.
