progressive cyberdadaism from our nation’s capital
Just last night I was making the point in conversation that the left, or whatever it is we’re calling ourselves these days, doesn’t have anything equivalent to the unholy trinity of Fox News, Drudge, and Limbaugh.
There is no permanent mechanism in place to smear politicians at the drop of a hat. At least not in such a triangulated way as the Repubroots.
Take this morning’s jihadfest from Fox News: (ThinkProgress)
DOOCY: Why didn’t anybody ever mention that that man right there was raised — spent the first decade of his life, raised by his Muslim father — as a Muslim and was educated in a madrassa?
[snip]
DOOCY: We should also point out that Barack Obama’s father is the one who gave him the middle name of Hussein. And the thing about the madrassa, and you know, let’s just be honest about this, in the last number of years, madrassas have been, we’ve learned a lot about them, financed by Saudis, they teach this Wahhabism which pretty much hates us. The big question is was that on the curriculum back then? Probably not, but it was a madrassa and the big question is whether or not any of these revelations about the fact that he was a Muslim — right now I understand he does go to the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, although not a regular parishioner — but raised as a Muslim, went to a madrassa.
[snip]
DOOCY: Is it ancient history or do you think madrassa matters. [phone ringing] Josh joins us from Colorado. Good morning to you Josh.
CALLER: What’s up?
DOOCY: What do you think?
CALLER: I think that ultimately this will probably be one of the main reasons is he not elected.
DOOCY: Just the fact that his father was a Muslim, he was raised as a Muslim for awhile, and went to a madrassa school in Jakarta?
CALLER: Right. I mean, you think that would possibly give him better insight on the enemy, maybe he doesn’t consider terrorists the enemy.
There was a time not so long ago when this kind of religious smear would result in a collective at long last sir, have you no shame moment. In this time the answer, apparently, is not only do they have no shame, they consider this an honest day’s work.

“the left, or whatever we’re calling ourselves these days”
We definitely need a new name. “Hippos” works as well as anything else.
We are hostage to two dimensional thinking. Politics is more of a sphere. If one travels far enough left; one reaches the same place as traveling far enough right. There is really no difference between Communism and Fascism when it comes to idolatrizing law over justice, tyranny over liberty.
The balance of liberty and justice and equality for all is found in the center, not in the wings. Our nation has traveled so far right, that the center now appears far left. Your quote is just another proof.
What is most amazing is that this “Allah Loving Muslim” (Obama) seems to understand and follow the Commandments of Christ better than most of these so-called Christians. I would say that makes him a Christian and them not.

Thou shall not persecute sinners (Luke 6:37, Matthew 7:1-2, John 8:7).
Therefore, Thou shall know the difference between sin and crime (Matthew 22:21, Mark 12:17).

“We are hostage to two dimensional thinking. Politics is more of a sphere. If one travels far enough left; one reaches the same place as traveling far enough right. There is really no difference between Communism and Fascism when it comes to idolatrizing law over justice, tyranny over liberty.”
You’re making several important points here. I can’t help but believe that the point of points is that as long as we look at things in a two-dimensional way, then we’ll always be at the service of people who want to manipulate our way of looking at the world.
Isn’t it interesting that Communism and Fascism both lead to a centralized, closed, authoritarian society? The ideologies don’t have much, if anything in common, but the end result appears to be the same.
But, back to your first point. I tend to believe that everyone has their own golden ticket out of dualistic thinking. For some it’s through religion, for others the arts, for others philosophy/science/mathematics.
The problem, of course, is that it takes a constant effort not to see things through a dualistic prism. Unfortunately, this isn’t a time where making an effort is in vogue.

Here is my golden ticket into dualistic thinking:
The Pledge of Liberty
We hold these truths to be self evident:
All are equal in rights of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.
It is the duty of government to secure these rights through regulation and justice.
I pledge to do my best to secure these rights for all.
We hold these truths. They do not. We are patriots. They are tyrants. We serve god and man. They do not.

Well the real question is: Did Sen. Obama, who has a Muslim father, was raised as a Muslim for awhile, and went to a madrassa school in Jakarta, did he ever kill a Christian? Probably not, but his father was a Muslim, he was raised as a Muslim for awhile and he went to a madrassa school in Jakarta where they hate us.

The word “madrasah” just means “school”, and this was a school he went to when he was 6 in Indonesia. Other than being a school and being Muslim, what connection is there between this and the schools for promoting militant Islam that are funded by the Saudis? Of course, for the target audience, the word “Muslim” is quite enough. Hmm, I wonder if Zalmay Khalilzad ever went to a “madrasah”?
Amazingly, Ana Marie Cox has something worthwhile to say about how this story is a two-fer for the Republican smear machine.
