progressive cyberdadaism from our nation’s capital
I’m not sure what the origin of the expression “moonbat” is, but I’m guessing it has something to do with the belief that rays from the moon make people insane (thus the word “lunacy”), smushed together with the word “dingbat.”
Now, some of you may point out that rays from the moon don’t actually make people insane, and when the lunatic right uses the expression they’re both: a.) showing once again their poor grasp of science, and b.) projecting.
Instead, I’ll use a piece of the same superstition, which says that rays from Mars make people start wars. Which is about as good theory for the lunatic fringe as any. Instead of just sticking “bat” on the end, however, I tried to picture the reptilian pack nature of the right-wing blogosphere, and “velociraptor” leaped to mind.
If the left blogosphere is made up of “moonbats,” then the right is made up of “martian velociraptors.” Fair enough?
I say this in preface to Glen Greewald’s survey of martian velociraptors regarding the Cindy Sheehan bust. His point is that there doesn’t seem to be much self-correction amongst our martian velociraptor colleagues.
After calling for the dogs of hell to be unleashed on Ms. Sheehan for violating the law, it seems she didn’t violate the law. Ouch.

It just so happens that last night I was reading the Wiki on moonbats, which is informative, though of course I have no idea how accurate it is. All kinds of wacky etymology there.
